Spinal Decompression Therapy Q&A for Patients

What does it treat?

It treats conditions of the lower back and neck such as bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, sciatica (shooting pain down the legs), and brachial radiculopathy (shooting pain down the arms). These conditions can respond to care if they are brand new, or if you have suffered with them for many years

What does decompression actually do?

Decompression allows for a gentle separation of the disc spaces in between the bones to deliver a negative pressure, or suction. This suction is powerful enough to allow herniated or bulging disc material to migrate back toward the center of the vertebral junction so the lesion can heal. This separation also allows irritated nerve roots (ie a "pinched nerve") like in sciatica to have the pressure physically moved off of them so that they can begin to heal. This healing also results in pain relief and the return of function to the body such as return of range of motion or reduction of muscle spasms in the back or the legs. In degenerative disc disease and chronic pain, the decompression re-hydrates the discs and improves the motion of each joint therefore decreasing chronic pain , inflammation and swelling.

What are the treatments like?

First, it is important to know that there are no drugs, injections, or specialized imaging studies administered in order to receive decompression therapy. Treatments feel like a stretching of the neck or the back and do not involve and twisting, cracking or popping of the joints. At our office, we have 2 decompression suites, each with it's own table, so your treatment is delivered in the privacy of your own room while you watch TV or listen to music. They last about 15-25 minutes and each visit builds on the one before to increase the ability of your spine to move and accommodate to the decompressions. Your chiropractic doctor will plan and monitor your progress as you move through each treatment protocol.
